March 30, 2016 - Please note that Corbu Consulting is not undertaking any new projects. The company will formally close at the end of 2016 due to the retirement of its principal Ion Corbu. June 4, 2014 – Corbu Consulting made a presentation on Waterpower and Climate Change Mitigation at the Canadian Water Resources Congress in Hamilton, Ontario. For a summary of the presentation, click here.
September 27, 2013 – Corbu Consulting was selected earlier this year to provide hydraulic studies, engineering design, and AutoCAD project execution drawings for water diversion facilities at a hydroelectric generating station in Ontario. The project ensures that the required minimum flow in the tailrace can be maintained at all times. The proposed design was reviewed and approved by relevant government agencies, and the project is now approaching the end of its execution phase.
October 21, 2012 - Corbu Consulting made a presentation on quantifying the impact of a waterpower project on fish habitat. The presentation was given at the 2012 Annual Conference of the Ontario Waterpower Association. OWA represents the interests of the waterpower industry in Ontario.
October 17, 2012 – Corbu Consulting made a presentation on the calculation of the Inflow Design Flood for a small hydroelectric project in Ontario. The presentation was given at the CEATI International Workshop on “Planning for Extreme Events: A Water Management and Dam Safety Perspective”. CEATI provides technology solutions to its over 100 participating electrical utilities from around the world.
February 8, 2012 - Corbu Consulting was retained by Wolf River Hydro to provide professional services for its waterpower plant in USA.
November 29, 2011 - Corbu Consulting was retained by The Power Limited Partnership (TPLP) to conduct hydrologic and hydraulic studies for an existing 5.8 MW run-of-river waterpower plant in Northwestern Ontario. TPLP is an Ontario licensed electricity generator.
November 3, 2010 – Corbu Consulting was selected by Namewaminikan Hydro, to conduct several hydrologic and hydraulic studies for the development of two waterpower plants in Ontario. These studies include: development of a stage-discharge rating curve, flow frequency analysis, duration curves, regional flood, probable maximum flood, HEC-RAS river simulations, dam break impact analysis, inflow design flood, and optimization of control structures’ discharge capacities. Namewaminikan Hydro is an affiliate company of AXOR Group of Montreal. AXOR is a leader in renewable energy development with a portfolio of more than 800 MW of projects distributed around the world. Hydroelectric development represents an important portion of its overall energy portfolio.
July 28, 2010 – Corbu Consulting has conducted a webinar for the members of the Ontario Waterpower Association (OWA) on the current renaissance of hydroelectric development in the world, Canada, and Ontario. OWA represents the interests of the waterpower industry in Ontario, including those of more than 95 percent of its waterpower producers.
July 22, 2010 - Corbu Consulting was selected by Coral Rapids Power (CRP) and Ontario Power Generation (OPG) to conduct an independent hydrologic study for a proposed waterpower plant in northern Ontario. Coral Rapids Power, a company wholly-owned by the Taykwa Tagamou Nation, has a mandate to explore and develop hydroelectric opportunities within its Traditional Territory. Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is an Ontario-based electricity generation company whose principal business is the generation and sale of electricity in Ontario. McLeod Wood Associates helps manage the project.
July 21, 2010 - Corbu Consulting was retained by ORTECH as sub-consultant for conducting independent reviews of technical documents associated to new hydroelectric plants in Ontario. ORTECH is a leading renewable energy consulting firm based in Toronto.
November 25, 2009 – Corbu Consulting made a presentation entitled “Hydroelectric Development and Mitigation of Climate Change with an Ontario Perspective” at Ontario Power Generation. OPG is an Ontario-based electricity generation company. For a summary of the presentation, click here. The presentation was repeated at the University of Waterloo, as part of the Environmental and Water Resources Engineering Seminar Series.
June 8, 2009 – Ion Corbu made a presentation on Mitigation of Climate Change and Hydroelectric Development, on invitation from INRS in Québec City. The National Institute of Scientific Research (L’Institut National de la Recherche Scientifique - INRS) is a Canadian University establishment dedicated to research, post graduate studies, and the formation of scientific researchers.
May 21, 2009 – Corbu Consulting was retained by an established Toronto-based consulting company for providing hydrology, water resources and hydroelectric operation consulting services related to two Canadian hydroelectric generating stations.
November 11, 2008 – Corbu Consulting has received a thank-you letter from Ontario Power Generation (OPG) in recognition for its advice and help related to adaptation of hydroelectric generation to climate change. To view the OPG letter click here.
November 6, 2008 - Corbu Consulting became a member of the Ontario Association for Impact Assessment (OAIA). OAIA is a forum for advancing innovation, development, and communication of best practices in impact assessment. It promotes development of local, provincial, national, and global capacity for the application of impact assessment and provides a foundation for equitable and sustainable development.
August 27, 2008 - Ion Corbu was invited by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and Canada Research Chairs (CRC) to evaluate a proposal for a 5 year collaborative research program submitted to the International Research Chairs Initiative (IRCI). This initiative is a recent collaboration between the IDRC and the CRC Program. IDRC is a Crown corporation created by the Parliament of Canada to fund research activities that are designed to directly benefit developing countries. The CRC program was created to maintain a high level of scientific research activity at Canadian universities and improve the country’s international competitiveness.
February 1, 2008 – Corbu Consulting was selected for the Scientific Research and Experimental Development (SR&ED) Qualified Suppliers List of the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). Entities registered on this list are accredited to provide specialized technical consulting services to CRA for the SR&ED Program. This is the single largest federal government program supporting business research and development by providing tax assistance to Canadian businesses.
October 26, 2007 – Ion Corbu was invited by Canada Research Chairs to be a member of its College of Reviewers for the Canada Research Chairs Program. Government of Canada created this program to establish 2000 research professorships, Canada Research Chairs, in universities across the country. The Canada Research Chairs Program invests $300 million a year to attract and retain some of the world's most accomplished and promising researchers.
June 16, 2006 - Ion Corbu was invited by Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada to participate to a Site Visit Committee to review and evaluate an application for grant from an Industrial Chair of a Canadian University. The proposed research addresses climate change and its impact on water resources as applicable to the design and/or operation of new and existing hydropower facilities. Major producers of hydropower in Canada sponsor this research program.
June 6, 2006 – Ion Corbu has made a presentation on Hydropower at the Canadian Water Resources Association Annual Conference in Toronto.
August 15, 2005 - Corbu Consulting Inc has signed an agreement with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources for access and participation to the Waterpower Information Data Exchange. WIDE is part of the Ontario Land Information Warehouse developed by Land Information Ontario to archive and manage Ontario’s geospatial and tabular data. The Warehouse contains a wealth of data including information useful for Watershed Management, Waterpower Development and Environmental Assessment Studies.
June 29, 2005 - Ion Corbu was nominated to the Civil Engineering Grant Selection Committee of Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada. NSERC promotes discovery by funding university professors and by encouraging Canadian companies to participate and invest in university research projects.
May 6, 2005 - Corbu Consulting Inc became a member of the Association of Power Producers of Ontario.
Apr 28, 2005 - Corbu Consulting Inc became a member of the Canadian Hydropower Association.
March 15, 2005 - Ion Corbu became a member of the International Hydropower Association.
February 2, 2005 - Corbu Consulting signed an agreement to provide project management services to The SPi Group.
January 31, 2005 - Corbu Consulting Inc. was granted a Certifacate of Authorization by Professional Engineers Ontario for providing professional engineering services in the Province of Ontario.
January 6, 2005 - Corbu Consulting Inc became a member of Ontario Waterpower Association.
October 18, 2004 - Ion Corbu received the Project Management Professional Certification from the Project Management Institute.
